Albatross Modeling Workshop

Background

The PFRP hosted a workshop in November 2007 on modeling black-footed albatross population dynamics. This followed from a workshop held in November 2001 on modeling protected species populations. The purpose of the 2001 workshop was to explore differences between modeling approaches used in fisheries stock assessment and protected species conservation and to assess the feasibility of developing integrated statistical models for species of marine turtles, albatrosses, and marine mammals. One of the workshop conclusions was "Development of integrated statistical models for Hawaiian albatross populations is feasible and could be started at any time." This conclusion was incorporated into the December 2001 PFRP request for proposals, and two projects on modeling of albatross populations were eventually funded.

The general purposes of this workshop are to:
1. review results of the PFRP-fund projects,
2. compare these results to other population assessments,
3. identify problems in model development and application, and
4. suggest future directions for model development.
